People of the Ocean Blues is a film that documents the lives of people trying to survive an ecological disaster on Canada’s east coast. The cause and effects of the devastation are systematically explored with respect to the environment, cultural identity, and demographic destruction. The plight of the Newfoundland and Labrador fishing community is told by archaeologist Latonia Hartery who visits one of these towns for her first archaeological field job, only to be overwhelmed by the impoverished remains of what is considered Canada’s oldest and distinct (European-related) lifestyle. This film depicts the struggles not only of an economy, but also of individuals, after the collapse of the North Atlantic cod stocks. This documentary is written and directed by Latonia Hartery. Amina Anthropological Resources Association is seeking ways to complete and market this production.
